The sun is hard to miss: a glaring white shape with eyes set into its pointed rays. Below it, black clouds and silhouettes make the stage look almost drained of color. Bringing in the characters reveals twisted faces, exposed teeth and flashes of red. Their poses change as they perform, with some hanging into the scene and others barely emerging from the darkness.

You build the music by layering the characters’ loops, choosing which parts to keep as the lineup takes shape. The bonus characters also have short stories in the gallery. Footlong Nachos turns up as a wide-eyed yellow character clutching a shotgun, with a backstory about hiding from monsters. These bonus stories are explicitly non-canon: little what-if scenarios separate from the main storyline.

• 1.Start the game and click through the opening notice to reach the stage.
• 2.Drag a character icon from the lower rows onto an empty silhouette.
• 3.Add more characters to combine their sound loops. Click a performing character to remove it, then drag in another to change the mix.
• 4.Use the circular-arrow button at the upper right to reset the lineup.
• 5.Open the portrait icon near the upper left to explore the gallery. Use the arrows to browse entries and the X button to return.
